Fabric Care Basics: How to Care for Every Fabric Type

Each fabric type has unique properties and limitations. Choosing the right care method can extend the life of your clothing many times over.

Natural Fibers

Natural fibers come from plants or animals. They generally breathe well but require more care.

Cotton — Easiest to Care For - Machine wash at 40-60°C - Tolerates strong agitation - Watch for shrinkage

Silk — Most Delicate - Hand wash or dry clean only - Never wring or use high heat - Store in dark places

Wool — Shrinks Most Easily - Hand wash or wool cycle at 30°C - Dry flat - Use specialized detergent

Synthetic Fibers

Synthetic fibers are chemically produced. They're durable but can't withstand high heat.

Polyester — Most Durable - Easy to wash, quick drying, wrinkle-free - Avoid high temperatures

Nylon — Most Elastic - Wash in cold water - Never iron on high heat
